The University Archives and Special Collections hold various materials on folk-related themes, including this month&#8217;s item which is a book on <em>Legends, Tales and Songs in the Dialect of the Peasantry of Gloucestershire<\/em>. Published c.1877, this volume lists various ballads, stories\u00a0and a glossary of words in the Gloucestershire dialect. It forms\u00a0part of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (BGAS) Library, which we act as custodians of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Contents of the volume include the intriguing\u00a0&#8220;George Ridler&#8217;s Oven&#8221;, &#8220;The Witch of Berkeley&#8221;, &#8220;The Moolberry Tree&#8221;, &#8220;The Tithe Pig&#8221; and &#8220;Gloucestershire Harvest Home Choruses&#8221; to name a few. The volume is one of a number of items currently of interest to first-year English and second-year History students who are looking at\u00a0changing English\u00a0and methods of historical enquiry respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Below is a selection of words from the Gloucestershire dialect glossary. Do you recognise any?:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Adry,<em> thirsty<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Barken, <em>the homestead<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Breeds, <em>the brim of a hat<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Buckling, <em>the foul linen of a household collected for washing<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Butty, <em>a comrade in honour<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Caddlement, <em>a trifling occupation<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Cess, <em>a word used to call dogs to their food<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Flump, <em>applied to a heavy fall<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Junkets, <em>sweetmeats<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Leech, <em>a cow doctor<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Paunch, <em>to disembowel game<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Piddle, <em>to trifle, to do light work<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Skurry, <em>a flock in confused flight<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Snite, <em>to blow the nose<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Spreathe, <em>to have face or hands roughened by frost<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Twissle, <em>to turn around rapidly<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Yopping or Yoppeting, <em>a dog in full cry after game<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">We also have other material on folk-related subjects both from the BGAS Library and our Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) collection.
