Read through the letter then read every other line.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:right\">Kissing Corner<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt;text-align:right\" align=\"right\">Love Lane<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt;text-align:right\" align=\"right\">Feb. 4<sup>th<\/sup> 1896<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">Dear Miss Smith<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">The great love I have hitherto expressed for you<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">is false, and I find my indifference towards you<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">increases daily. The more I see of you the more<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">you appear in mine eyes an object of contempt.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">I feel myself every way disposed and determined<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">to hate you. Believe me, I never had an intention<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">to offer you my hand. Our last conversation has<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">left a tedious insipidity which has by no means<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">given me the most exalted idea of your character;<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">your temper would make me extremely unhappy<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">and if we are united, I shall experience nothing but<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">the hatred of my parents, added to everlasting dis-<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">pleasure in living with you. I have indeed a heart<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">to bestow, but I do not desire you to imagine it<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">at your service. I could not give it to anyone more<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">inconsistent and capricious than yourself, and less<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">capable to do honour to my choice and family.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">Yes I hope that you will be persuaded that<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">I speak sincerely, and you will do me a favour<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">to avoid me. I shall excuse you taking the trouble<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">to answer this; your letters are always full of<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">impertinence, and you have not a shadow of<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">wit or good sense. The father on finding this read<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it straight through but Miss Smith<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 only read each alternate line<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0 0 10pt\">This witty letter was written as part of the Manuscript Chelt for 1895-1896. The Manuscript Chelts were compiled by students at the Cheltenham Training College (later St Paul\u2019s College) as part of a tradition dating from 1879.
