This month\u2019s item is a christening certificate with a difference. One of the old initiation traditions of St Paul\u2019s students was to assemble a \u201cJury\u201d of senior students to assign nicknames to the unsuspecting first years.<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

This certificate was given to student J R Thompson in November 1928. He was given the name \u201cRoscoe\u201d and his College \u201cFather\u201d (a student in the senior year) was R Southern. The Auctioneer would have led the proceedings along the lines of the photograph below, taken outside the North Porch at Francis Close Hall.<\/div>\n
