[As noted <a href=\"http:\/\/nigelwarburton.typepad.com\/virtualphilosopher\/2008\/01\/how-things-have.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a> by Nigel Warburton]<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland, the Herald newspaper has considered this &#8211; causing a number of its online readers to comment <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theherald.co.uk\/news\/news\/display.var.1927668.0.0.php#comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a> about the value of philosophy. The comments are worth a glance as they reveal something of the public attitude to philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to ask our students (and other readers) to comment as to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Whether there was any value in studying philosophy (to both individuals and society in general)<\/li>\n<li>Whether academic disciplines such as Philosophy and Religious Studies should have to demonstrate a &#8216;usefulness&#8217; in order to be considered worthwhile<\/li>\n<li>What reasons motivate individuals to study these subjects.
