{"id":4360,"date":"2010-04-01T14:34:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/rpe\/2010\/04\/01\/rpe136-cordoba-trip-2010"},"modified":"2010-04-01T14:34:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:34:00","slug":"rpe136-cordoba-trip-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/2010\/04\/01\/rpe136-cordoba-trip-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"RPE136 &#8211; Cordoba Trip 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">This year\u2019s Religion, Philosophy and Ethics module, Overseas Study Vis<span style=\"color:#333333\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/3d790-dscf7132.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455180967611318994\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/3d790-dscf7132.jpg?w=300\" \/><\/a><\/span>it saw a lively group of students head out from a damp Gloucestershire to the Spanish sun&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:11.25pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">This module (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/Pages\/mapsdescriptors.aspx?moduleCode=RPE136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">RPE136<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">) is designed to offer students the opportunity to experience an extended visit in the company of other students to a city or area of historic significance in the study of Christianity and\/or other religions. The essence of this full module is a five night and five day study tour of an historic location, such as Rome, Jerusalem or Turkey. For the past two years, our destination has been Cordoba.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal;margin-bottom:0\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"><b>Thursday<\/b><br \/>After a more eventful journey than planned, we arrived at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lospatios.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">Los Pati<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lospatios.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">os<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> once more \u2013 for a busier year than last time. We began with our usual orientation tour, and the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.torrecalahorra.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> <\/span><\/a><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.torrecalahorra.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">Museo Vivo de Al-Andalus \/ Torre de la Calahorra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">The wireless-headphone tour ends on the roof, and with a view of the Roman Bridge and Mezquita. After this we headed off for the walk to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juntadeandalucia.es\/cultura\/museos\/MAECO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">Archaeological Museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> \u2013 with its Roman and other materials \u2013 maybe by next year the English-language labels will finally be in place&#8230; The day ended with a quiet drink in the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plaza_de_la_Corredera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> Plaza Corredera.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"><b>Friday<\/b><br \/>This was the day when we met up with Imma (our tour guide from last year), who showed us round the Jewish Quarter (and the onl<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/a5b45-dscf6844.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455181519375917378\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/a5b45-dscf6844.jpg?w=300\" \/><\/a>y remaining synagogue) , the Old Town and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/spain\/cordoba-mezquita\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">Mezquita<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> \u2013 with a commentary to contrast with the info you get from the Catholic Church leaflet that you are give on entry. In many ways, the Mezquita is the highlight of the trip \u2013 and at the end of the tour, students are left in the building to stay as long as they wish.<\/p>\n<p><b>Saturday<\/b><br \/>We spent the morning at the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/spain\/cordoba-alcazar-de-los-reyes-cristianos.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> Alc\u00e1z<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/spain\/cordoba-alcazar-de-los-reyes-cristianos.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">ar de los Reyes Cristianos in Cordoba <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">\u2013 which has a history of the site, as well as spectacular formal gardens.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon was spent wandering the Old Town and (in an addition to last year) at the Museum of Jewish life ( <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.casadesefarad.es\/in\/entrada.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">http:\/\/www.casadesefarad.es\/in\/entrada.html<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> ).<\/p>\n<p><b>Sunday<\/b> was a day off, and the staff investigated the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.andalucia.com\/magazine\/english\/ed4\/madinat.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> Madinat al-Zahra <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">site \u2013 as a possible addition for next year. This ruined Islamic city has a new museum, which we checked out \u2013 and which is very hi-tech, but also gives a fantastic introduction to the region.<\/p>\n<p>Students explored \u2013 one rented a bike (we ran into him at Madinat al-Zahra), some went walking, and others pottered about the Old Town (there are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cordoba24.info\/english\/html\/museen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">loads of museums in Cordoba <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">\u2013 so lots to explore).<\/p>\n<p><b>Monday<\/b><br \/>This was the day-trip to Seville. After an early walk, the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.andalucia.com\/travel\/trains\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> Avant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\"> train sped us to Seville. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal;margin-bottom:0\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">Following last year\u2019s geographical challenges, we found our way with <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/14167-dscf7096.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455182085593901922\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/14167-dscf7096.jpg?w=300\" \/><\/a>more ease \u2013 and headed to the astounding site of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patronato-alcazarsevilla.es\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">Alc\u00e1zares Reales de Sevilla <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">\u2013 in which you could lose days (and indeed students, but most seem to have come back); and then there is \u2013 next door \u2013 the huge, towering <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/spain\/seville-cathedral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">Seville Cathedra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, sans-serif\">l, a gothic immensity almost totally obliterating traces of a mosque on the site.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tuesday<\/b><br \/><span style=\"color:#333333\">Travel home&#8230;
