This involved Roy, Shelley and myself taking 21 students (5 of them 2<sup>nd<\/sup> years, the rest level 1 \u2013 all RPE students) to Cordoba in Andaluc\u00eda, Spain. This trip was to explore the period of Islamic rule, the philosophers who emerged from it, the relation <\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">of faiths in that period (and the claims of a Golden age of religious tolerance that <\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">surround the period), the route of Greek ideas (such a<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">s those of Aristotle) into Europe, and the Christian re-conquest of the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">Wednesday \u2013 a mid afternoon coach whisks us to Birmingham airport for a glamorous, jet-set <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lospatios.net\/imagenes\/welcome_r1_c1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lospatios.net\/imagenes\/welcome_r1_c1.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">flight with RyanAir to Malaga..<span>  <\/span>We are (much to my relief) met at the airport by another coach and driven to Cordoba, where we are dro<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">pped only a 5 minute walk from th<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">e hotel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">We arrive at Los Patios (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lospatios.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.lospatios.net\/<\/a> ) around midnight \u2013 relieved that despite only having one star the hotel is friendly, clean and incredibly well-situated (it turns out to be a great place \u2013 with nice staff, night porters to let late students in, good food, and more \u2013 we hope to use it again next year).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">Thursday \u2013 after a lie in \u2013 we have an orientation walk to Plaza de las Tendillas, s<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">o that students can find non-tourist shops, supermarkets, and the like. We then have lunch and cross the newly restored Roman Bridge to the new Torre de la Calahorra museum: this tower features a history of Andalucian <\/span><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;     &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\"><span> <\/span>life in the Islamic period \u2013 with models, speaking statues, and wireless headphones. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;     &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">Here we began to understand the situation that prevailed i<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">n Cordoba during the Andalusian Umayyad dynasty, which lasted from 756 to 1031: often referred to as a \u2018Golden Age\u2019 of religious tolerance. While this is a simplification, the idea of an accommodation that allowed Muslim, Jews and Christians to live in relative peace, within part of Europe, is a compelling area to study \u2013 and this proved a good place to start.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/2516e-dscf4426.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/2516e-dscf4426.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317610729132328626\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">More at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torrecalahorra.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.torrecalahorra.com\/<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;     &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">Some felt the museum might be a rath<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">er smoothed out account of the history \u2013 but it was good as an introduction to the relationship bet<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">ween Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the region. Many of us were glad to get out onto the roof terrace of the museum..<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;     &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">This museum also had a model of the large Mosque in Cordoba \u2013 now a Cathedral \u2013 which we were to visit the next day \u2013 as it would have been in its heyday, rather than as it is now (where there is now a huge Cathedral sticking out the <\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">middle of it \u2013 a very striking image if you are able to view it from above).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\"><span> <\/span>Following this we went to Cordoba\u2019s archaeological museum \u2013 where much of the city\u2019s Roman heritage is on show \u2013 which is significant and ver<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">y visible around the city. There is also material here from the Visigoth period that came before the arrival and dominance of Moorish culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">Friday was a busy day \u2013 domina<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/2d35c-dscf4520.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/2d35c-dscf4520.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317611167786991954\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">ted, as is the city, by the Mezquita \u2013 the grand Mosque that is now a Cathedral. Our guide, Imma, took us round the Jewish qua<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">rter and a Synagogue before we entered the hugely impressive<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\"> Cathedral\/Mosque. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;     &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">The building still inspires strong feelings, and there was a lot to <\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">reflect on after and during this visit. The Catholic Church offers a very particular view in the leaflet that you collect as you enter \u2013 which implies that the place was a Christian place of worship (due to the presence of a Basilica prior to the Mosque) and that<span>  <\/span>the re-conquest and consequent building of the Cathedral was merely a reclaiming. This seems, at the least, a simplification. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">The building itself left us all with some sense of awe, but also perhaps with more troubling feelings regarding its history and claims made about it. We were also t<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">old that Muslims have often requested that Catholic authorities allow them to pray in the Mezquita\/Cathedral \u2013 but that they are always turned down.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\">Some info <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/articles\/mezquita_spanish_cathedrals.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE <\/a>might be of interest..<br \/><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;     &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">On Friday evening we all went to the Plaza de la Corredera for a drink, followed by a meal at the Hotel \u2013 and an early night before Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">Saturday began with a 6.30am alarm call\u2026<span>  <\/span>As is that was not enough of a shock for students, we then walked 25 minutes to Cordoba train station for the early morning train to Seville. Arriving at 8.30, and after a breakfast, we set off to find the Alcazar (Alc\u00e1zares Reales de Sevilla) \u2013 which is a fortress with the most amazing, extensive gardens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">The place looks Moorish in style, and was mostly made by Moorish workers, but despite smaller earlier buildings, much of this Alcazar was built in the 1360s for King Pedro (the Cruel). Some argue that the Islamic buildings here were even built on the site of V<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">isigoth buildings. However, this mix of claim and confusion over historical buildings seems not uncommon in a region where what may seem a matter of dusty history still has the power to cause passionate disagreement and dispute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">This was followed by the Cathedral in Seville \u2013 also on the site of a Mosque \u2013 the spire contains much that was a minaret and there are small parts of the arches of the mosque still intact if you look hard enough. You can climb the spire to get stunning views of the city \u2013 as we did, but this was another to chance to reflect on the purpose of the trip, in coming to an understanding of the way in which religions in this region have interacted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><!--[if gte vml 1]&gt;     &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">Some students (and staff) also managed to find Flaherty\u2019s bar and catch a Liverpool victory over Man Utd\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">After a late night back, Sunday began with the Cordoba Alcazar \u2013 the <span>Alc\u00e1zar de los Reyes Cristianos<\/span> (Spanish for &#8220;Alc\u00e1zar of the Christian Monarchs&#8221;), \u2013 with huge Roman mosaics, and yet more elaborate gardens, \u2013 and then coach-plane-coach journey to C<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">heltenham, arriving at FCH in the early hours of Monday<\/span><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\"> morning\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;line-height:112%\"><span style=\"line-height:112%;font-size:100%\">While formal student evaluations are a matter for exciting places like Course Boards \u2013 early informal reports suggest that this was a great way for students to learn, to get to know each other and to acquire more general life-skills and confidence.
