{"id":4285,"date":"2008-10-06T22:50:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-06T22:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/rpe\/2008\/10\/06\/greetings-from-big-sky-country"},"modified":"2008-10-06T22:50:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-06T22:50:00","slug":"greetings-from-big-sky-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/2008\/10\/06\/greetings-from-big-sky-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Greetings from Big Sky country\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/d0ceb-dsc04978.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254178702764934706\" height=\"221\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/rpe\/rpe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/07\/d0ceb-dsc04978.jpg?w=300\" width=\"309\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>I\u2019ve been speaking today to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umt.edu\/ethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Ethics <\/a>here in Missoula, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Montana<\/a>, about the purpose of teaching Ethics as an academic subject.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the points we discussed were:<br \/>\u00a2 In an ethics class we take students \u2013 and don\u2019t in our classes in Higher Education \u2013transmit an ethic.<br \/>\u00a2 We school our students in the problems of identifying the good \u2013 but we refrain from dictating their conclusions.<br \/>\u00a2 They come to us, they ponder the good \u2013then we set them loose..<br \/>\u00a2 What have we done?<br \/>\u00a2 We ask that they understand, but not that they implement\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I asked whether we ought to see ourselves also as helping students develop their moral character?
