They were designed to be ambitious &#8211; to help courses be consistent, focus on what matters most for an authentic EfS learning experience, and to mainstream this into course design.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It supports EfS to move out from the margins of course experiences, encouraging academic teams to integrate this into core course priorities and enable more students to experience this learning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key principles and the reasoning for them are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Joined-up sustainability learning<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<br>Authentic sustainability learning must connect people, planet, and profit &#8211; the pillars of sustainability that cross subject boundaries. Targeting only single issues, without making links for students, does not help to develop \u2018systems thinking\u2019 or true sustainability outcomes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Integrated into compulsory modules<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>Mainstreaming means targeting core course experiences, so all students can develop these skills. Optional modules offer partial responses and focused attention, but not all students take them and the sustainability focus may not transfer to core learning outcomes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Integrated across all levels of study<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<br>Quality learning across the course journey builds knowledge and capability in layers for effective integration. Opportunities can be taken to join dots from specialist focal points in the subject or profession, to the broader thinking and capabilities that support sustainability change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Integrated as part of assessment design<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Assessments reflect the essential learning outcomes and main focus for student attention in learning. autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"criteria\">Course rating criteria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the 4 quality principles, the course rating criteria tested were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NO MEDAL &#8211;<\/strong>\u202f<strong>no relevant sustainability learning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No explicit sustainability learning \u2013 or issues are treated partially and separately, without links to the environment, e.g. taught content labelled \u2018financial sustainability\u2019 or \u2018social sustainability\u2019 but lacking environmental focus, or environmental focus without links to any social and economic view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BRONZE\u202f-\u202fsome relevant teaching<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taught content that shows an explicit joined-up sustainability focus, e.g. social concerns around equality or wellbeing are clearly linked to environmental justice and impacts, not treated as a separate issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SILVER\u202f- partial integration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li>At undergraduate\u202f-\u202f<strong>an assessment<\/strong>\u202fwhere joined-up sustainability knowledge and subject knowledge are applied together, in at least one compulsory module\u200b or unit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>At postgraduate\u202f\u2013\u202f<strong>learning activity<\/strong>\u202f<strong>beyond just taught content<\/strong> either as formal assessment or skills development exercise, in one compulsory module or unit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GOLD\u202f- fully mainstreamed:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li>At undergraduate\u202f- an integrated learning process with\u202f<strong>at least\u202fone assessed element<\/strong>\u202fin core modules or units at\u202f<strong>each level of study<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li>At postgraduate\u202f\u2013 an integrated learning process across the course, with\u202f<strong>one assessed element<\/strong>\u202fin a core module or unit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull\" style=\"min-height:319px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-palette-color-7-background-color has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\">How to rate your course<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Film 6 - How to rate your course\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8WgNdAv6fyw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; students explore the use of sport in international development and how sporting organisations respond to development needs e.g. social justice, equality or wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-7-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rating: no medal<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-7-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rationale<\/strong> &#8211; although this module touches on certain UN global goals (equalities, wellbeing) and takes an international perspective, an environmental dimension is missing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill has-palette-color-7-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 44%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\">First year undergraduate business module<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\"><strong>Experience<\/strong> &#8211; students are introduced to the workings of one of the creative industries. The global goals framework and the concept of triple bottom line are used. Students are encouraged to think about how they can apply the goals in this industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rating: Bronze<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rationale<\/strong> &#8211; good and relevant sustainability teaching, joining dots to the discipline and professional specialism. They take part in class exercises requiring them to actively apply EfS thinking, and discuss and evaluate best EfS practice &#8211; but these exercises are not formally assessed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-7-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rating: Silver<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-7-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rationale<\/strong> &#8211; The course has relevant activities requiring students to make links to course-specific knowledge. It also applies sustainability to this professional, although the activity is not formally assessed (if it did, it would achieve Gold).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill has-palette-color-7-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 44%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\">Undergraduate Architecture course<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\"><strong>Experience<\/strong> &#8211; Sustainability is strong and clear in both module content and assessment at first year, second year and third year. Students identify relationships between people, environment and economy, often via live briefs with industry partners bringing an implementation lens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rating: Gold<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-8-color has-text-color\"><strong>Rationale<\/strong> &#8211; Students have relevant and assessed experiences at each level of the course.
