{"id":2025,"date":"2013-11-08T10:04:55","date_gmt":"2013-11-08T10:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/landscapearchitecture\/?p=781"},"modified":"2013-11-08T10:04:55","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T10:04:55","slug":"copenhagen-trip-day-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/2013\/11\/08\/copenhagen-trip-day-2\/","title":{"rendered":"COPENHAGEN TRIP &#8211; Day 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We spent the second day exploring the centre of Copenhagen &#8211; walking along Strogert, the famous pedestrianised urban centre (the focus of Jan Gehl&#8217;s research into urban space), exploring some of the key historic landscapes and buildings of the city, and finishing down by the harbour at Nyhaven (New Harbour) &#8211; the classic Copenhagen photograph of brightly coloured buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/yaoandyuchen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-782\" alt=\"YaoandYuchen\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/yaoandyuchen.jpg?w=225\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Yao and Yuchen in Amagerstrasse, part of the Strogert open space pedestrian network.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/amager.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-783\" alt=\"Amager\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/amager.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Intricate paving systems throughout the centre add to the overall sense of place as well as evidencing the value put on the urban landscape.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/tiledsquare.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-784\" alt=\"TiledSquare\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/tiledsquare.jpg?w=225\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Beautiful glazed tile courtyard down a small alley off Strogert &#8211; we stumbled across spaces like this throughout the city which made it such a joy to explore.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/livingwall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-798\" alt=\"LivingWall\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/livingwall.jpg?w=225\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Another accidental discovery, a living wall and nest box in a courtyard just of Strogert.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/copenhagensimplicity.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-791\" alt=\"CopenhagenSimplicity\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/copenhagensimplicity.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Simple colours, functional forms, beautiful materials, and cycling. Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/roundtower2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-785\" alt=\"RoundTower2\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/roundtower2.jpg?w=225\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Just before lunch we went up the RoundTower http:\/\/www.rundetaarn.dk\/en\/the-tower\/ a 17th Century brick structure with a 209m long spiral ramp running from ground level up to the roof &#8211; a completely original building found nowhere else in the world. Views from the top across the whole of Copenhagen, over the offshore\u00a0 windfarms to Sweden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/roundtower.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-786\" alt=\"RoundTower\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/roundtower.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"137\" \/><\/a>Inside the tower &#8211; everything is curved, floors, walls, ceilings &#8211; yet all made of brick.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/thegroup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-787\" alt=\"TheGroup\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/thegroup.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Meeting after lunch outside the RoundTower &#8211; left to right &#8230; Jen, Yuchen, Gethin, Yao, Ximena, Jess, Rachel, Andy, Ben, Corthan, Sophie, Danny, Ellen, Bob, Qian, Cat, Susie, Francis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/sharedspaceeverywhere.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-799\" alt=\"SharedSpaceEverywhere\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/sharedspaceeverywhere.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>And yet another discovery &#8211; shared space streets between the barracks, same material running across the whole space with trees, picnic tables, seats, lights helping to turn what could be a vehicle focused street into a pedestrian focused place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/naturalpigments.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-788\" alt=\"NaturalPigments\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/naturalpigments.jpg?w=225\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Walking through the 18th Century barracks built for the navy defense of the city. The buildings are beautifully coloured using natural pigments in unexpected combinations &#8211; in fact the whole city celebrates colour in its architecture with a sense of joy missing from so many other places.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/thecitadel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-789\" alt=\"TheCitadel\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/thecitadel.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>On to the Citadel &#8211; the final part of the defensive structure built around the city in the 18th Century. A massive star shaped landform with buildings sheltered in the centre, overlooking the sea to the East and protecting the city to the West. Now a public park with barracks, some residential buildings, paths and a memorial.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/memorialcitadel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-790\" alt=\"MemorialCitadel\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/memorialcitadel.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"51\" \/><\/a>The memorial within the Citadel earthworks &#8211; a 1980s design that connects the Royal Palace to the harbourside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/nyhavn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-797\" alt=\"Nyhavn\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/landscapearchitecture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/445\/2019\/04\/nyhavn.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a>Finishing the day at Nyhaven, the New Harbour area of Copenhagen between the Royal Palace and the Parliament area, another celebration of colour in the urban landscape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We spent the second day exploring the centre of Copenhagen &#8211;
