{"id":3078,"date":"2012-07-09T10:23:40","date_gmt":"2012-07-09T10:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/?p=105"},"modified":"2024-11-05T12:09:26","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T12:09:26","slug":"holiday-souvenirs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/2012\/07\/09\/holiday-souvenirs\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday Souvenirs \u2013 and History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/446\/2018\/05\/westmorland.jpg?w=300\" \/><\/a>I guess we all bring something back with us as souvenirs of our summer holidays in the sun \u2013 I<br \/>\nknow I do!\u00a0 Additions to a collection of Americana, or a memento of some seaside resort in Italy.\u00a0 All those fridge magnets, plastic statues of Liberty, etc\u2026.\u00a0 However, they pale to insignificance when compared to what some earlier British travelers brought back as I was reminded the other weekend when I visited the exhibition called \u201cThe Capture of the Westmoreland\u201d in the Asmolean Museum, Oxford.\u00a0 The sub-title gives a clue \u2013 \u201cAn Episode of the Grand Tour\u201d; the <em>Westmoreland<\/em> was a ship sailing from Livorno in Italy to London in 1779.\u00a0 It was loaded with a cargo of souvenirs acquired by a variety of British tourists (including the dukes of Gloucester and Norfolk) \u00a0in Italy.\u00a0 These souvenirs ranged from Parmesan cheese to paintings, drawings, watercolours, sculptures, maps, prints, and books that were intended to adorn the homes of British aristocrats and gentry to demonstrate their education and refinement.\u00a0 Unfortunately for them, the <em>Westmoreland<\/em> was seized by two French ships and taken to Malaga where the contents of the vessel were sold off.\u00a0 Some ended up in the Spanish Royal collection and some items went as far as the court of Catherine of Russia.\u00a0 The exhibition in the Ashmolean shows 120 of the items from the ship and gives a real insight into the meaning of the \u201cGrand Tour\u201d \u2013 and suggests rather a different purpose to foreign travel than some of the visitors to Ibiza these days!\u00a0 The exhibition \u2013 and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashmolean.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashmolean<\/a> \u2013 are well worth a visit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I guess we all bring something back with us as souvenirs of our summer holidays in the sun \u2013 I know I do!\u00a0 Additions to a collection of Americana, or [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_EventAllDay":false,"_EventTimezone":"","_EventStartDate":"","_EventEndDate":"","_EventStartDateUTC":"","_EventEndDateUTC":"","_EventShowMap":false,"_EventShowMapLink":false,"_EventURL":"","_EventCost":"","_EventCostDescription":"","_EventCurrencySymbol":"","_EventCurrencyCode":"","_EventCurrencyPosition":"","_EventDateTimeSeparator":"","_EventTimeRangeSeparator":"","_EventOrganizerID":[],"_EventVenueID":[],"_OrganizerEmail":"","_OrganizerPhone":"","_OrganizerWebsite":"","_VenueAddress":"","_VenueCity":"","_VenueCountry":"","_VenueProvince":"","_VenueState":"","_VenueZip":"","_VenuePhone":"","_VenueURL":"","_VenueStateProvince":"","_VenueLat":"","_VenueLng":"","_VenueShowMap":false,"_VenueShowMapLink":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[772],"class_list":["post-3078","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-neil-wynn"],"blocksy_meta":[],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3078","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3078"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3078\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3538,"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3078\/revisions\/3538"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3078"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3078"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3078"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
