It will demonstrate the various types of employment history graduates can go into,\u00a0providing some useful guides for existing students, but also highlight the fascinating journeys of our graduates. The next story comes from Alan Sparkes (Class of 2002), who came to the University as a mature student, and also went on to complete a successful MA by Research.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">Becoming a mature\u00a0student in History\u00a0at the University of Gloucestershire was a life changing experience for me.\u00a0In the early 1990s I\u00a0left my career as a Professional Firefighter with the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service\u00a0due to (at that time) undiagnosed PTSD.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">I was devastated to leave a career I loved, but it was only when I stared studying that I began to see a future. I nervously began my degree in September 1999, but rapidly found my feet and absolutely loved studying. My general interest in History began to refine itself into a fascination with English Local History as an academic discipline, as well as historiography.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2553\" style=\"width: 432px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2553\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/446\/2018\/06\/Alan-Sparkes-300x247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/446\/2018\/06\/Alan-Sparkes-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/446\/2018\/06\/Alan-Sparkes-768x633.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/history\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/446\/2018\/06\/Alan-Sparkes.jpg 835w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Then and now, Alan in 2002 (left) and in 2017 (right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">I was fortunate enough to have a second year essay published in a local history journal\u00a0thanks to the mentoring of the late John Howe and it was his encouragement that saw me develop my dissertation in\u00a0Local History too.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">In 2002 I was one of only two history students to graduate with first class honours and I\u00a0applied\u00a0to study for a Masters by Research at the University. At the same time I applied for a\u00a0post working part-time in the newly\u00a0built Oxstalls Campus Library, where I was able to put all my student experience to good use, helping other learners.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">My Masters was a revelation to me, as I really began\u00a0see my research and writing style develop. When I\u00a0finally took my viva voce in 2005, my thesis passed with just a few minor typographical errors and I\u00a0was able to have two sections of background work for it published,\u00a0including one paper in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgas.org.uk\/tbgas_bg\/v125\/bg125311.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">Shortly after, I began teaching history at the local college, while\u00a0working full-time in the University Library, with a view to teach full-time\u00a0at\u00a0either college or university. To this end I was planning on\u00a0doing a PhD, extending the work of my Masters.\u00a0However, a sudden heart attack at the tender age of 44 forced me to slow down and I reluctantly put the teaching and PhD on hold.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;font-size: small\">Eleven years after my heart attack I&#8217;m still working for the University. It has been 16 years now and despite my initial disappointment\u00a0at having to back away from my academic ambitions, I still love working here. Every day I have contact with students and staff, and the University is a big part of my life.
