{"id":503,"date":"2024-05-31T14:18:39","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T14:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/fisri\/?p=503"},"modified":"2024-05-31T14:45:11","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T14:45:11","slug":"university-study-reveals-value-of-cheltenham-festival-to-local-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/fisri\/2024\/05\/31\/university-study-reveals-value-of-cheltenham-festival-to-local-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"University study reveals value of Cheltenham Festival to local economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><strong>A special report by University of Gloucestershire indicates that last year\u2019s Cheltenham Festival \u2013 one of the biggest events in the sporting calendar \u2013 was worth an estimated \u00a3274 million to the local economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The figure is nearly three times the estimated total for the event in 2016, when jump racing\u2019s most prestigious four days secured approximately \u00a3100 million for local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The figures are contained in a report released today by Cheltenham Racecourse which assesses the impacts of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival on the local economy through the use of Economic Impact Analysis (EIA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This methodology examines the effect of an event on the economy of a specified area, in this case Cheltenham Racecourse, and measures the potential direct impact on the local economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The key findings of the project, led by the University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/courses\/academic-schools\/gloucestershire-business-school\/finance-in-society-research-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finance in Society Research Institute<\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(FISRI<em>),&nbsp;<\/em>were:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The total economic impact (direct and indirect) of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival is estimated at \u00a3274 million \u2013 up from an estimate of around \u00a3100 million when the project was last undertaken in 2016.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">More than half of racegoers make a return trip to and from Cheltenham on the day they attend The Festival.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Of those not making a return trip to the town, about a third of attendees arrive a day or more before The Festival and stay at least a day or more after the festival.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The average expenditure of attendees at The Festival increased from \u00a3584 in 2016 to \u00a3697 in 2022.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Attending The Festival was on the \u2018bucket list of things to do\u2019 for two-thirds of the participants (67%), and more than half (53%) of respondents \u2018always or usually attend\u2019 the Festival.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Results were compiled by the University from an online survey managed by Cheltenham Racecourse using a questionnaire developed to achieve the project aim. A survey was distributed to each party that attended asking about their expenditure during the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">Dr Charles Afriyie (left), Senior Lecturer in Accounting within the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/courses\/academic-schools\/gloucestershire-business-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gloucestershire Business School&nbsp;<\/a>at the University and Director of the FISRI<a>,<\/a>&nbsp;said: \u201cThe project undertaken by University of Gloucestershire in 2016 was the first time the impact of the Cheltenham Festival on the local economy had been properly researched and analysed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSeven years later, it is fascinating to see how The Festival has continued to grow, including in its beneficial effect on the economy in the Cheltenham locality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe hope our project will prove useful for Cheltenham Racecourse in its planning for the years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ian Renton, the Jockey Club\u2019s Regional Managing Director for the West Region, said: \u201cWe welcomed a record crowd of 280,627 over the four days of The Festival in 2022 and it is very satisfying to see that have such a tremendously beneficial effect on the wider economy in the Cheltenham area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOur links with the local community are strong, and earlier this week we announced an enhanced version of the \u2018Love Our Turf\u2019 campaign at the Festival to put engagement with and the needs of our local residents and businesses at the heart of
