Using a dialogic feed-forward assessment, integrating a critical reflection on AI
Rachael Bullingham (School of Education and Science)
Students on a second year Children in Society module have historically struggled with a 3000-word assessment as this is the first time they have written an essay of this length. Additionally, within the Sport, Coaching and Physical Education course group we are aiming to develop our assessments to be more applied, not only to support the students with employability skills, but also to stop generic essays that can potentially be written by AI or essay mills. However, AI is also a potentially useful tool for students to engage with to support their understanding, planning and academic approach when used within the university guidance. Therefore, this year, the assessment on Children in Society has been adapted to firstly engage with the process of dialogic feed-forward to support students’ essay writing, but to also allow them to reflect critically on the use of AI within lectures and assessment development. This presentation will overview the development of the assessment and the underpinning research and reflect on the implementation and effectiveness of the approach.
