The working university: Preparing students for the realities of a freelance world
Andrew Moxon and Paul Roberts (School of Creative Arts)
This presentation outlines the findings of a UTF Project, highlighting the changes necessary to transform learning practice from a largely theoretical classroom-based context towards facing the world of work.
Students often lack the confidence to contact organisations and people outside of their immediate circles of influence. Moreover, when successful in this endeavour, they sometimes lack the social skills necessary to maintain levels of trust and confidence from people or organisations whilst undertaking their photo assignments. To overcome these issues, we are placing Level 4 students into work scenarios using departments from within the University. In this way, students learn how to interact with strangers and experience professionals working. This also allows them to concentrate on their photography skills earlier, gaining confidence using the camera and lighting outside the studio and classroom.
This idea has been rolled into other event-orientated Level 4 modules as a way of introducing students to difficult scenarios earlier, under safe and controlled conditions. This new approach is now being used as a USP when recruiting, as competitor institutions/courses still teach their practice inside the classroom.
Our talk will illustrate some of the successes (and failures) in creating a more hands-on approach to Level 4 modules and how this can be sustained in the current HE environment.
