Pedagogical value of the academic integrity procedure for poor academic practice: A case study
Hayley Legg (School of Education and Science)
At all levels of undergraduate study, we require students to think critically and write independently. Core learning outcomes and assessment indicators of excellence require students to integrate the key arguments from relevant literature. However, many students struggle with the skill of writing independently, and often their work is a paraphrased patchwork of other people’s ideas and words.
In this lightning presentation I will highlight a case study of two Level 4 students of similar academic standing. Through the use of two case studies on the same assessment, I will demonstrate the pedagogical value of submitting a student to the Academic Integrity Panel for poor academic practice. I will show the importance of student and staff engagement through the academic integrity process, in conjunction with the use of formative feedback to strengthen student understanding of academic standards and independent writing.
