International Pronouns Day\u202fseeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are Pronouns?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\u202fStonewall<\/a>, pronouns are the words we use to refer to people\u2019s gender in conversation – for example, \u2018he\u2019 or \u2018she\u2019. But not everyone identifies with the binary definitions of gender (male and female) so they may\u202fprefer gender-neutral pronouns such as ‘they\/them’ or ‘ze\/zir’. Everyone within our University Community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and so understanding their pronouns is a simple gesture which has a big impact.\u202f 
 
Someone’s pronouns are not always obvious, so we encourage staff and students to introduce themselves with theirs. By introducing yourself with your pronouns or including them on email signatures we help to create a more inclusive campus by not making assumptions of someone’s gender identity based on their appearance or name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why should we share our pronouns?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From our newest student to our graduating class, we\u2019re always working to include and engage everyone. One way you can do this is to share your pronouns, or the words you want to be called when people aren\u2019t using your name. Like names, pronouns are an important part of how we identify that deserves to be respected. And we recognise that assuming someone\u2019s gender can be hurtful, especially to members of our community who are transgender, genderqueer, or non-binary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a community, we are all learning together about the importance of pronouns and being better allies to the trans and non-binary community on campus. We hope that you\u2019ll join us in striving for inclusion, justice and respect\u2014because at the University, we welcome all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
