Nowruz Mobarak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to this week\u2019s blog. Isn\u2019t it great when an initiative inspires and motivates other colleagues. Having celebrated Chinese New Year, a colleague asked if we could highlight the Persian New Year. I was thrilled, so this week\u2019s blog shares how Maryam and her family celebrate Persian New Year.<\/p>\n<p>Nowruz is the name of the Iranian New Year also known as Persian New Year. The word Nowruz is a combination of Persian words \u201cNow\u201d, (English: new) and \u201cRuz\u201d (English: day). Despite its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iranian_peoples\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persian<\/a> origins, Nowruz has been celebrated by diverse communities. It has been celebrated for over 3,000 years in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Asia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Asia<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caucasus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caucasus<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Sea_Basin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Sea Basin<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Balkans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Balkans.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nowruz is the day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equinox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vernal equinox<\/a>. The first day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iranian_calendar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persian calendar<\/a> falls on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_equinox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_equinox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">equinox,<\/a> the first day of spring, around 21 March. The first day of the official Nowruz is always the day on which the sun entered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aries_(astrology)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aries<\/a> before noon. It usually occurs on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 21<\/a> or the previous or following day, depending on where it is observed. The moment the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sun<\/a> crosses the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celestial_equator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celestial equator<\/a> and equalizes night and day is calculated exactly every year, and families gather together to observe the rituals. Nowruz is the first day of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Farvardin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farvardin,<\/a> the first month of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_Hijri_calendar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persian solar calendar.<\/a> According to the Persian calendar the time of vernal equinox for this year in UK is Wednesday 20th of March 10:00 pm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How we celebrate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before the New Year arrives, we clean our homes top to bottom known as Khane Tekani (Spring Cleaning). This is usually performed a week before Nowruz. We also take the time to buy new clothes for the New Year as well as buying flowers, especially hyacinths and tulips, for Nowruz Eve.<\/p>\n<p>Our Norooz holidays span from Charshanbeh Suri (jumping over the bonfire to absorb its reddish healthy strength, while getting rid of one\u2019s yellow unhealthy state of being), on the evening preceding the last Wednesday of the old year, climaxing at Norooz.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-490\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equality\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Fire-dance-300x177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Fire-dance-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Fire-dance-1024x603.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Fire-dance-768x452.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Fire-dance.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We then set up a &#8220;haft-seen&#8221; (meaning &#8220;seven s&#8217;s&#8221;), a display which includes seven items beginning with the letter S that each represent spring and new beginnings. These seven S\u2019s are:<\/p>\n<p>Sabzeh (wheat or barley or lentil sprouts, grown in a dish)\u00a0a symbol of rebirth,<\/p>\n<p>Seeb (Apple) a symbol of Health and beauty,<\/p>\n<p>Senjed (Dried Oleaster wild olive fruit) symbolizing Love,<\/p>\n<p>Samanu (Sweet Pudding Made from wheat germ)\u00a0a symbol of Affluence or fertility,<\/p>\n<p>Serkeh (Vinegar) a symbol of age and patience,<\/p>\n<p>Seer (Garlic) a symbol of medicine and<\/p>\n<p>Sumag (Sumac) a symbol of the colour of sunrise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-491\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equality\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Haft-Seen-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Haft-Seen-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Haft-Seen-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Haft-Seen-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/equity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/302\/2019\/03\/Haft-Seen.jpg 1377w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the above, Haft-Seens may also include other &#8216;S&#8217; items such as &#8216;Sekkeh&#8217; (Coins, a symbol of wealth), &#8216;Sonbol&#8217; (Hyacinth).<\/p>\n<p>There are often some common items in Haft-Seen which do not start with &#8216;S&#8217;, but appear as symbols or a decoration; such as &#8216;Ayyeneh&#8217; (Mirror) a symbol for Light as well as decorated Eggs, candles and a bowl of water with a goldfish in it. The Persian New Year starts with the sun rising in the star sign Pisces (the fish). A book of Poetry such as Divan of Hafez, Shahnameh (by Abolqasem Ferdowsi) or a holy book such as the Avesta or Qu&#8217;ran are also common.<\/p>\n<p>We conclude our Nowruz Holliday with Sizdah Bedar, the thirteenth day of the New Year. Across the globe, the number 13 is generally considered to be unlucky. In fact, people often avoid this number at all costs! However, we come together to shed the bad omens around the number 13 and instead cast it into positivity, happiness and great joy.<\/p>\n<p>We spend the last day of the holidays at a picnic in the orchards, on the prairies, by the seaside, or in the foothills where we can eat and drink, dance and sing, and play. We also take the Sabzeh from the Haft Seen and release it into a nearby stream or river. The action of throwing away the Sabzeh represents removing negativity from one\u2019s home. It is believed that the Sabzeh collects all the sickness, bad luck and general misfortunes hiding on the path of the family in the coming year.
