Not judging ourselves but noticing our moods and movements. How were the deeper currents in us flowing, below the often busy surface? What was especially life giving? An activity? A relationship? A place? And what felt more life draining? Where do we sense the invitation for the coming year? And what might we want to leave behind? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We did this last year on New Year&#8217;s Eve. It took a while to get into it, but it was very helpful. Then we climbed Cleeve Hill to see the sunrise on New Year&#8217;s Day &#8211; which was good too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/chaplaincy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/431\/2019\/12\/sunrise-over-cleeve-hill.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/chaplaincy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/431\/2019\/12\/sunrise-over-cleeve-hill.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/chaplaincy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/431\/2019\/12\/sunrise-over-cleeve-hill-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/chaplaincy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/431\/2019\/12\/sunrise-over-cleeve-hill-768x488.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Sunrise over Cleeve Hill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two sites if you would appreciate more resources for doing this &#8211; one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ignatianspirituality.com\/annual-examen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simpler<\/a>, one a little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ignatianspirituality.com\/examen-prayer-for-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deeper<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here is a prayer poem from Stephen Cherry which gives other suggestions for this reflection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the year\u2019s final sands fall swiftly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>through the narrow hip of the glass,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>teasing me that they are speeding up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me find a wayside bench where I can<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>rest and reflect \u2013 just a few seconds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>for each month of the year past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me feel again the heart moments that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>mattered most, let me think back to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>before the problem was solved, the decision made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me recall the faces and voices that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>meant much, that cared for me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>drew me on, restrained me with love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am grateful for those who<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>by giving me some unwittingly difficult word<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>wounded and saved me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me remember the places where<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>good things happened; where there<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>was refreshment, delight and social joy;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>let me recall feasts and treats, visits and encounters,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>where radiance was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am grateful for the good days,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the good people,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the good times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me visit once more the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>shadows and shades of benighted<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>minutes and days, the hours<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>when purpose was eclipsed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the moments when I met<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hostility with fear,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>where uncertainty made me anxious,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>when I took the opportunity for the cruel look,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the self-indulgent feeling, when<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>it was my sin that spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me fly back over the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>months, hovering where I should,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>pin-pointing grace and disgrace,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>joy and woe, when I have<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>done well or let myself down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And all this not for the sake of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>past alone, though it deserves its honour,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but for the joy of the present yet to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of the year, it can be really helpful to reflect back over the previous year.
