{"id":583,"date":"2024-09-03T14:39:31","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T14:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/CC4HH\/?p=583"},"modified":"2024-10-30T10:09:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T10:09:02","slug":"the-battle-of-tewkesbury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/2024\/09\/03\/the-battle-of-tewkesbury\/","title":{"rendered":"The Battle of Tewkesbury"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><strong>This project was conducted by: Mike Barnes, Michael Holmes, Laura Hunt, Shauna Ralph, Becky Turner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our group investigated whether the Gastons field in Tewkesbury played a major part in the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471, which was a crucial moment in the Wars of the Roses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Jump to: <\/strong><a href=\"#timeline\">Timeline<\/a> | <a href=\"#legacy\">Legacy of the Battle<\/a> | <a href=\"#gastons\">The Gaston&#8217;s of Tewkesbury<\/a> | <a href=\"#excavation\">Excavation<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"timeline\">Timeline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Wars of the Roses saw years of conflict for the throne between two royal families \u2013 the House of York and the House of Lancaster. The Battle of Tewkesbury took place on 4 May 1471 and it marked the end of the second phase of these bloody battles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>14 April 1471:<\/strong> Queen Margaret lands at Weymouth with her second army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Lancastrians headed for Gloucester, but couldn&#8217;t get. They headed for Tewkesbury instead &#8211; they found that Edward IV&#8217;s army were too close to allow for escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>4 May 1471: <\/strong>Soldiers began to prepare their weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Lancastrian and Yorkist forces began dividing their armies into three sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Edward made a tactical decision to hide 200 spearmen in bushes at Deer Park. When the battle began, the Lancastrians were immediately outnumbered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Somerset directed his men to attack the Yorkists from the rear, but were driven back and crushed by Yorkist spearmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As the Yorkists advanced, the Lancastrian line broke and many of them fled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">However, they were trapped by the river and many of them were killed at the Bloody Meadow &#8211; including the Prince of Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Lancastrians reached Tewkesbury Abbey and tried to claim sanctuary, but the Abbot refused them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The remaining Lancastrians were executed and Queen Margaret was captured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Her family in France paid a ransom for her release and the Yorkists claimed victory over the battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>The Battle of Tewkesbury saw a crushing defeat for the House of Lancaster with the death of the Prince of Wales and the capture of Margaret of Anjou. They&nbsp;represent the conclusion of the battle where&nbsp;the Yorkists defeated the Lancastrians. parts\u2026\u2019 totalling 41 acres &nbsp;\u2013 1 rod 29 perches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"excavation\">Excavation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What was the nature of our dig?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To explore the location of the battle and finding evidence from that period which aided us to pinpoint parts of the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile no-mb\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">Trench 1 was placed near a stream at the bottom of the Gastons field. We discovered evidence of ridge and furrow plough marks across the field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In addition, to the natural slope of the field towards the river, we speculated that artefactual materials may have shifted towards this area.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile no-mt no-mb\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">Trench 2 was a little further upfield. An earlier metal detecting survey produced a significant number of metallic objects in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Due to the nature of metal detecting, ceramic or organic materials could have been missed and remain in the ground at this point.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The search begins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Having removed the grass turf, we began&nbsp;trowelling the ground. We carefully trowelled the soil hoping to find anything of interest. Using a delicate tool we were able to see changes in the soil, which might provide evidence of human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our findings:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66%\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Trench 1<\/strong> \u2013 We found two small, round depressions.
