In the UK, Stonewall started as a small group campaigning against Section 28 of the Local Government Act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The charity now actively campaigns for the equality of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people across Britain.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"che\">The Cheltenham-Gloucester CHE Group<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Cheltenham-Gloucester CHE Group was formed in September 1974 and from November 1982 it was known as Gloucestershire&#8217;s Gay and Lesbian Community (GGLC). The group has successfully reflected the views of Gloucestershire&#8217;s gay community since the 1970s. It provides support, activities and fundraising events. October 1993 complaints to the Chief Constable of Gloucestershire about the tactics used locally by plain clothed police to entrap cottagers led to the establishment in November 1993 of the Gloucestershire Triangle Liaison Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/CC4HH\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/04\/Rainbow-Flag.png);background-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"643\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/CC4HH\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/04\/Rainbow-Flag.png\" alt=\"Rainbow flag flying in the wind against a blue sky.\" class=\"wp-image-504 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/04\/Rainbow-Flag.png 643w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/04\/Rainbow-Flag-300x177.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">During the 1990s the Freedom Flag was recognised in America and Australia. It has since been used widely in the UK and Europe as the banner for the Lesbian and Gay Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Red = Life<br>Orange = Healing<br>Yellow = Sun<br>Green = Nature<br>Blue = Art<br>Violet = Spirit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ironically the two missing colours are Pink for Sexuality and Indigo for Harmony.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"local\">Local LGBTQ+ Iniatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Glos Triangle Liaison Group (Glos TLG)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Gay community and Glos Constabulary came together in 1994 to improve community liaison and tackle same-sex issues in the county. Cheltenham Borough Council and the police worked together to stop &#8216;cottaging&#8217; at Cox&#8217;s Meadow and Montpelier toilets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Acting on advice from the gay community, warning signs stating THIS COTTAGE IS BEING WATCHED&#8217; were put up. Consequently reports of cottaging decreased. The group then issued cards to Custody Sergeants containing information about local helplines, GU clinics and how to access safer sex information. Instead of arresting anyone suspected of cottaging, these actions were aimed at deterring cottaging and offering alternative places to find assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"709\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/CC4HH\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/04\/Liason-Group.png\" alt=\"Advert: Don't want to report a crime because you are Gay or Lesbian or feel victimised because of your sexuality? Write in confidence to Triangle Liaison Group, c\/o 36 Andover Road, Cheltenham, Gloucs.\" class=\"wp-image-506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/04\/Liason-Group.png 709w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/04\/Liason-Group-300x61.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Advert promoting the Triangle Liaison Group.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HIV\/AIDS prevention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Gloucestershire Gay Men&#8217;s HIV\/AIDS Forum was an alliance formed between the Gloucestershire Gay Community, Gloucestershire Friend and Health Promotion Gloucestershire in 1994 to increase HIV\/AIDS awareness, reinforce the safer sex message and to provide resources, education and information on local health care services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In March 1994 they made their first safer sex packs. 14,000 packets were made up containing condoms, lube and information sheets on where to seek advice or help for sexual health. They were distributed at the Racecourse disco and at Crackers nightclub. This campaign received a great deal of positive feedback from the Health Promotions Department and HIV\/AIDS related organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gloucestershire friend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">GGLC was the springboard for the formation of Gloucestershire Friend, which went live in March 1990. Trained volunteers offered confidential counselling and befriending for those concerned about their sexuality -Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or just not sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"timeline\"><strong>LGBTQ+ Key Events Timeline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1967 <\/strong>&#8211; Sexual Offense Act decriminalised homosexual relations in the UK<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1969 <\/strong>&#8211; Demonstrations in New York called Stonewall Riots started after police raided the Stonewall Inn gay bar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1972 <\/strong>&#8211; First Pride festival in London attracted 2000 participants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1974 <\/strong>&#8211; Formation of Cheltenham-Gloucester Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) Group<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1987 <\/strong>&#8211; GCHQ Officials reconsider Andrew Hodges case following his suspension after telling his superiors he was gay, making him &#8216;vulnerable to blackmail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1988 <\/strong>&#8211; Section 28 introduced. meaning teachers were not allowed to &#8216;promote&#8217;gay relationships in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1989 <\/strong>&#8211; Stonewall UK was founded<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">GGLC wrote to local MPs about lowering the Age of Consent and received 3 replies: Nigel Jones, Cheltenham Lib\/Dem, voted for 16: Paul Marland, Conservative, offered no support at all to the gay community, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Cirencester and Tewkesbury Conservative, would possibly vote for 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1993<\/strong> &#8211; GGLC started Gloucestershire Triangle Liaison Group<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1993<\/strong> &#8211; Gloucester Gay Men&#8217;s HIV\/AIDS Trust set up providing a forum between Health Promotion Gloucestershire, GGLC, local clinics, HIV Counselling, and local gay venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1994<\/strong> &#8211; Age of Consent for homosexual relations lowered to 18 from 21<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1996<\/strong> &#8211; Gay couples given same rights as married couples to stay in their council home if their partner dies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1997 <\/strong>&#8211; CHE Group renamed The Gloucestershire Gay &amp; Lesbian Community (GGLC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1998 <\/strong>&#8211; 20% of schools include homosexuality in sex education in Gloucestershire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1999 <\/strong>&#8211; Sex Discrimination Act made it illegal to discriminate against any person on the grounds of gender reassignment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2000 <\/strong>&#8211; Gay and bisexual people allowed to serve in the armed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2001 <\/strong>&#8211; Sexual Offenses Amendment Act lowered the Age of Consent for homosexual relations from 18 to 16<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2002 <\/strong>&#8211; Gay people (and unmarried couples) allowed to adopt children<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2003 <\/strong>&#8211; Ban on &#8216;promoting&#8217; sexuality in schools (Section 28) overturned<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2004 <\/strong>&#8211; Introduction of Civil Partnerships<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2005 <\/strong>&#8211; Gender Recognition Act allowed transgender people to change their legal gender in the UK, with new birth certificate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2008 <\/strong>&#8211; Illegal to encourage homophobic hatred. In 2016, more than 7,000 hate crimes were reported in the UK<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2010 <\/strong>&#8211; Two women as mother and parent on a birth certificate, the first time there was no &#8216;father. First Gay Pride Event in Cheltenham. Equality Act bans discrimination on the basis of sexuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2012 <\/strong>&#8211; Life expectancy for a person with HIV increased by 15 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2013 <\/strong>&#8211; Gay marriage made legal in England and Wales, and later in Scotland<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2017 <\/strong>&#8211; Alan Turing Law pardons men who were cautioned\/convicted for homosexual acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"events\">Regular GGLC Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>06\/11\/1980<\/strong> First annual dinner held at Old Crypt Schoolroom, Gloucester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>12\/06\/1982<\/strong> First gay disco held at Cheltenham Racecourse, then held every month through the 1980s and 1990s.
