It brings together various local institutions, heritage organizations  and community groups to create greater public engagement with this history and foster a more sensitive appreciation of the past.<\/strong> <strong>To this end, the project has involved a number of collaborative initiatives to engage the public on various aspects of this history, and support other associated projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rank-math-toc-block\" id=\"rank-math-toc\"><h2><\/h2><nav><ul><li class=\"\"><a href=\"#introduction\">Introduction and aims<\/a><\/li><li class=\"\"><a href=\"#gloucester-and-the-slave-t-rade-a-documentary\">Gloucester and the Slave Trade: A Documentary<\/a><\/li><li class=\"\"><a href=\"#ongoing-projects\">Initiatives, events, and public engagement<\/a><\/li><li class=\"\"><a href=\"#m\">Media and references to the project<\/a><\/li><li class=\"\"><a href=\"#linked-projects\">Linked projects<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"introduction\">Introduction and aims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The project was developed in response to the&nbsp;<em>Black Lives Matter&nbsp;<\/em>protests of 2020 that swept across the United States and Europe following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis earlier in May. While these protests began in the United States, they quickly spread across the globe. In Britain, the protests raised significant questions about the way we discuss, remember and often forget the history of the transatlantic slave trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A number of clashes emerged over legacies of slavery in Britain, particularly the existence of monuments to slave traders such as Edward Colston in Bristol, which was removed by a group of protestors in June 2020. This debate over the way slavery is memorialized in the built environment extended to monuments of other historic figures such as the imperialist Cecil Rhodes, Robert Baden-Powell and even Winston Churchill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">For many people these monuments represent long-standing injustice and the way that racism has played a significant but underacknowledged role in our history. As a result, over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jan\/29\/tributes-to-slave-traders-and-colonialists-removed-across-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70 memorials have either been renamed or taken down in Britain following the events of 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Rather than focusing on issues of removal, the review of monuments in Gloucester is an opportunity to utilize the heritage landscape of the city to promote a better understanding of this neglected history. As well as examining the statues of monarchs like Charles II and Queen Anne, the review has been examining the memorialization of other key figures celebrated in the city, as well as people who played a large role in Gloucester industrial development. A copy of the review report was <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.gloucester.gov.uk\/documents\/s56162\/Appendix%20B%20Main%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published in January 2021<\/a>. Some the central questions of the ongoing project include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">What are the links between the city and the slave trade?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">How did the development of slavery as well as abolition affect the city?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">What links are still traceable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">How are these stories reflected in the city?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To what extent are they hidden, and why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">In what ways can acknowledging this history contribute to community cohesion going forward?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The City Council accepted the recommendations of the report in full, and so the project has been in an &#8216;implementation&#8217; phase since 2022, which involves the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">undertaking a broader review of Gloucester\u2019s colonial or imperial legacies and links.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">developing specific educational resources that can be used locally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">encouraging public engagement on the history of the City and its connections to the Transatlantic Slave Trade<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">collaborate with heritage organizations and museums in the city to engage with this history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">looking for opportunities to celebrate Gloucester\u2019s multicultural history.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloucester-and-the-slave-t-rade-a-documentary\">Gloucester and the Slave TRade: A Documentary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As part of the research phase of the project, the team produced a documentary on the initial results of the review in 2021. It begins to tell the stories that connect Gloucester to the broader history of transatlantic slavery and the British Empire. The film features members of the various organizations that contributed to the project. It was first screened at the Gloucester History Festival in 2021, and has been used by a number of local organisations and schools. Some of the main events and achievements are listed here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">The project supported the <a href=\"https:\/\/soldiersofglos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum<\/a> in their re-examination of their collections as part their <a href=\"https:\/\/soldiersofglos.com\/drumbeat-autumn-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>360-degree history<\/em> initiative<\/a>. This follows the update to the blue plaque on Whitefield to reflect his connections to slavery in the American colonies (see below), and the Museum of Gloucester&#8217;s temporary exhibition in March 2023 entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumofgloucester.co.uk\/blog\/tradition-and-legacy-a-spotlight-on-george-whitefield#:~:text=On%20March%207th%2C%202023%2C%20the,interesting%20dilemma%20for%20modern%20audiences.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Tradition and Legacy: a Spotlight on George Whitefield.&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"658\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/10\/George-Whitfield-658x690-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2275 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/10\/George-Whitfield-658x690-1.jpg 658w, https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/10\/George-Whitfield-658x690-1-286x300.jpg 286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.glos.ac.uk\/cc4hh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/sites\/391\/2024\/10\/GC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2285 size-full\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gloucestercathedral.org.uk\/cathedral\/heritage\/connected-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gloucester Cathedral and &#8216;Connected Lives:&#8217;<\/a> this is the Cathedral&#8217;s research project which aims to shed light on individuals who are memorialised within the fabric of the Cathedral, including their connections to the transatlantic slave trade, Indian colonialism, interfaith relations, racial injustice and any legacies that may still endure. It invites individuals from the city\u2019s diverse communities to form a Contested Heritage Panel to contribute to the initiative. The panel actively seeks to effect positive change by providing a safe space to engage in discussion on findings from the ongoing project, respecting any sensitivities the research presents. This UNESCO world heritage document has been the foundation for Rider Shafique, a Gloucester artist of Bajan descent, and Vanley Burke, known as the \u2018Godfather of Black British photography,\u2019 to explore the impact of the transatlantic slave trade from their viewpoint as descendants of Caribbean enslaved people. Together they consider the challenging themes of torture, inherited trauma and\u00a0 the ongoing legacy of chattel slavery.\u00a0The project has so far led to the production of a <a href=\"https:\/\/voicesgloucester.org.uk\/the-slave-song-trailer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short film<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gloucestercathedral.org.uk\/whats-on\/beating-back-the-past\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an exhibition<\/a> held at Gloucester Cathedral in September 2024. The University of Gloucestershire also hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/voicesgloucester.org.uk\/events\/beating-back-the-past-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a one-day conference<\/a> in support of the project in September 2024, which brought together artists, archivists and academics from the UK and Barbados, and discussed subjects such as <em>Transatlantic Trade: How can Caribbean and British Archives work together to share stories of our past?<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>How can creativity open up History?<\/em> You can see the conversation between Christian, Mr Kevin Farmer of Barbados Museum, and Rev.
