How to use bat detectors

Hand-held bat detectors

You could run an evening bat walk with friends or colleagues, or pupils, around your site, or you could sit in your back garden listening to the bats.

We have three different types you can borrow. The videos below describes how to use them. Each set comes with spare batteries, chargers, guides on how to use them as well as a brief guide to UK bats.

Echomoth static bat recorders

The Audiomoth is a small bat recorder that can be attached to a tree or drainpipe and left out for a period of a couple of days. It will record bat calls overnight; we can then analyse these for you and let you know what species you have at your site.

We have 12 of these for you to borrow. You could put a few of these up around your site to get a good picture of what bats you have near you. They will be setup and ready for use, all you need to do is put these on a tree or other structure.

A video tutorial will be available soon.

How to use SM-4 bat recorder

This is a larger bat recorder that can be left out for a period of several weeks, I am happy to lend this out to each group for up to 4-5 days. Return it after you have used it and we can analyse the recordings for you. The set comes complete with the recorder, batteries, battery charger and lock enabling you to securely attach this to a tree or other structure.
