And so, I joined the university in autumn of 2015, and I studied History.

“The best part of my time at the university was probably the social experience and meeting the mates that I currently still have. When I was applying for the university, I had everyone tell me that I would meet friends who would stay with me for life. It’s been almost half a decade since I have left the university and I can confirm that it is true.”

Kyle also found that university helped him find it easier to work more independently, and inspired him to take a step in a different direction, and serve his country.

“Due to my experiences at university, I do believe that I find it easier to work more independently. My time at university also gave me the confidence to try new experiences and to really push myself as an individual and give back to the country that we live in.

“Since leaving university I have joined the British Army as a Combat Medic. Here I specialise in delivering medical care on the battlefield. During my time serving I have been aboard a warship, worked in a medical centre providing primary health care to our soldiers, and I have even had the opportunity to assist with surgical procedures in a hospital.”

And Kyle believes that for those considering university, it is well worth doing.

“My advice to people considering applying to the university would be…just do it. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I had such an amazing time at Gloucestershire. The best three years you could possibly ask for. For current students still studying, I would say just keep working hard because when you’re accepting your certificate on graduation, all those sleepless nights are worth it.”

From university to the battlefield, Kyle Brecknell is writing his own story serving his country since graduating in history.
