Stepping out for the veterans world cup

Alumnus Keith Beardmore has spent the summer in play for the Veterans World Cup for over 70s and over 75s, held in Cardiff in August.
Keith, who studied teacher training at St Paul’s College, graduating in 1967, is 81 and works a vicar in Newport. Keith plays for Cymru, and you can read his report about his week of international football below in his own words:
“The tournament featured twenty seven teams from Denmark, Germany, USA, Canada, Australia, England and Wales. England and Wales each supplied three teams and I was fortunate to play for Team Cymru. As the oldest player I was interviewed several times for Radio and TV. The over 75s were divided into two leagues.
“My first two matches were against England and Germany, no pressure there! The over 70s and 75s finals went to penalties, Wales winning the over 70s and England the over 75s.
“As team Cymru we reached the final of the Bowl competition, playing Australia. It was another draw but we decided to share the trophy. After playing seven games in four days it seemed to be the sporting thing to do.
“We were presented with our medals to cap a wonderful week. That evening we attended a celebration banquet with five hundred present and I later tested positive for Covid! It was an unforgettable week of football for all involved.”
