The Life of Ukasaw Gronniosaw (James Albert)

As part of the exhibition at the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum on ‘The 28th Regiment of Foot & The West Indian Campaign in The Seven Years’ War’, running between 1st November 2023 and the end of March 2024, this digital story looks at the life of Ukawsaw Gronniosaw – also known as James Albert – who served with the regiment and is believed to be the first person of African descent to write a narrative of his experiences of transatlantic slavery.

The digital story was produced by Sarah Crowe, a postgraduate researcher in History at the University of Gloucestershire, and was put together from work conducted for the broader project ‘Legacies of Slavery in Gloucester.’
